the First Stage of Ryan's Method:
STRUCTURAL FIGURE SCULPTING — LEVEL 1: THE TORSO
Build the Engine of the Figure.
Every powerful figure begins with the torso.
Not the arms.
Not the head.
Not the details.
The torso is the structural core — the engine that controls balance, compression, stretch, and movement.
If the torso is weak, everything built on top of it collapses.
Level 1 teaches you how to construct it properly.
The Method You’ll Learn
This course introduces the first stage of the Structural Figure Framework:
1. Mass Architecture
Learn to organize the rib cage and pelvis as interlocking primary forms.
No anatomy overload — just clear, buildable volume.
2. Structural Mechanics
Learn to translate anatomy into structure that drives compression, counter-rotation, and rhythm.
See how balance is engineered — not guessed.
3. Surface Resolution (AKA The Walnut Method)
Learn one of the most important secrets of figurative sculpting: Convexity creates life; Concavity signifies death. You'll learn Ryan's innovative new method of creating a robust surface grounded in anatomy but without losing structural power.
Finish with clarity — not softness.
This is not about copying a torso.
It’s about understanding how one is built.
Trained in ZBrush,
Grounded in Classical Principles
What You’ll Walk Away With
✔️ A repeatable torso construction system
✔️ Clear proportional landmarks
✔️ Control over mass and rhythm
✔️ Structural confidence before anatomy detail
✔️ A foundation for all future figure work
Why Start Here?
Because everything else depends on it.
Contrapposto.
Seated figures.
Dynamic poses.
They all succeed or fail at the torso.
Level 1 builds the base that supports the entire Structural Figure Sculpting ladder.
Meet Your Instructor
I was part of the original team behind ZBrush, where I created tools like the Rake brush and built it's digital Anatomy Figure.
Over the past 20 years, I’ve trained thousands of artists—at studios like ILM, Blizzard, and EA Shanghai—helping them bridge the gap between technical skill and artistic mastery.
Now, I'm thrilled to welcome you to my newest project: a space dedicated to the deeper, more artistic side of our craft. Whether you're just starting or leveling up, I’m here to help you see, feel, and sculpt like an artist.
What's Included:
Proportions & Landmarks — Your Foundations
Build on measurable truth. Study proportional systems and essential anatomical landmarks that anchor your forms in reality, giving you reliable reference points for accuracy, balance, and believable construction.
Mass Architecture — Building Volume
Think like a sculptor, not a renderer. Learn to organize the body into primary, secondary, and tertiary masses, stacking and interlocking them so your figures feel solid, weighted, and structurally coherent from every angle.
Structural Mechanics — Force & Function
Understand how the body works beneath the surface. Explore how bones leverage, joints pivot, and muscles create compression and stretch — so every pose you sculpt feels mechanically sound and naturally alive.
Sculptural Resolution — The Walnut Method
Refine without losing structure. Using the Walnut Method, learn how to resolve forms from big to small — tightening planes, clarifying transitions, and finishing surfaces while preserving the strength of your underlying construction.
Dynamic Torso — Spiral & Counterforce
Unlock motion at the center of the figure. Study how the rib cage and pelvis rotate, compress, and counterbalance to generate twist and energy, giving your sculptures rhythm, tension, and expressive movement.

Structural Figure Sculpting — The Torso
Structure, Mass & Rhythm
Every great figure begins with the torso. Learn to construct the rib cage, pelvis, and spine as a unified structural engine. Master primary forms, landmarks, and proportion so your sculptures stand on clarity, balance, and intention.
Available Now
Contrapposto – Male & Female
Sculpting Weight & Balance
Bring structure to life through weight shift and opposition. Study how the rib cage and pelvis counter-rotate, how compression and stretch define gendered form, and how balance creates presence in the standing figure.
Est. Delivery: Early April 2026
Seated Figure
Gravity, Compression & Support
When the body sits, structure is tested. Explore folded forms, load-bearing masses, and anatomical compression as weight meets surface. Learn to sculpt figures that feel grounded, stable, and physically believable.
Est. Delivery: May 2026
Dynamic Figure
Stretch, Rotation & Force
Push the figure into motion through twisting torsos, extended limbs, and active compression. Learn to control spiral rhythms, directional energy, and structural integrity so your sculptures move with power and cohesion.
Est. Delivery: June 2026
